Nguyen Dang Thuong

Nguyễn Đăng Thường (1938) is a critic, poet, and translator.

He was born in Battambang, Cambodia, raised in Saigon and now lives in London, England. He has translated poems, plays and short stories from Neruda, Cendras, Prevert, Beckett, Claude Simon, Rimbaud, Stein, Bukowski and many others into Vietnamese, including Linda Lê's novel Voix, published as Tiếng Nói (San Jose: Văn, 2004). His poems and translations appear regularly on Tiền Vệ. Two poems, translated into English by Linh Đinh, have been published in Of Vietnam: Identities in Dialogue (Palgrave 2001) and the webzine Fascicle. Nguyễn Đăng Thường comments: “I don’t write poetry out of sadness. I become sad from writing poetry. To me, a finished poem is a corpse, a published poem a mummy.”
