Dana Sachs

Dana Sachs is a journalist and essayist, editor and translator, novelist and historian.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, she is a freelance journalist who has written for magazines and newspapers including Mother Jones, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Philadelpia Inquirer. With her sister Lynne she co-directed the award-winning documentary "Which Way Is East." Her brother Ira is also a film-maker and her husband Todd Berliner an historian of film.

With Nguyễn Nguyệt Cầm she edited Crossing the River: Short Fiction by Nguyen Huy Thiep (Curbstone Press, 2002) and Two Cakes Fit for a King: Folktales from Vietnam (Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2003). With Bắc Hoài Trân she translated a Lê Minh Khuê story included in Night, Again: Contemporary Fiction from Vietnam and the entire Lê Minh Khuê collection The Stars, the Earth, the River.

An excerpt of The House on Dream Street, her memoir about living in Hanoi, won the Associated Writers & Writing Programs' Intro Journals award for Nonfiction 1999. She is also the author of the novel If You Lived Here (Morrow, 2007). It concerns adoption, also a concern in her recent project, a history of Operation Babylift from Saigon and its consequences.

A graduate of Wesleyan University and the MFA program at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, she teaches journalism and Vietnamese literature courses at Wilmington where she lives with her husband and sons.
