He was born in Sóc Trăng and died in Saigon. Perhaps the greatest, most beloved scholar of southern Vietnamese culture, he was of Vietnamese, Chinese and Cambodian ancestries. In his will, he donated to the nation his antique-laden house at 9/1 Nguyễn Thiện Thuật, Saigon, with the stipulation that it be established as a museum. His books include Hơn nửa đời hư, Tạp bút năm Nhâm Thân (1992), Tạp bút năm Quý Dậu (1993), Sài gòn năm xưa (1960), Thú chơi sách (1960), Sài gòn tạp pín lù, Cuốn sổ tay của người chơi cổ ngoạn, Tự vị tiếng Việt miền Nam, Hồi ký 50 năm mê hát: 50 năm cải lương (1968), Phong lưu cũ mới, Thú ăn chơi, Khảo về đồ sứ cổ Việt Nam, Khảo về hát bội, and many others.
