Hoang Ngoc-Tuan
Hoàng Ngọc-Tuấn (1956) is an editor, scholar, translator, fiction writer, poet, playwright, and musician.
Born in Nha Trang, he arrived in Australia in 1983 as a refugee, after having been kept for 5 and a half years in various Vietnamese Communist prisons and re-education camps. In Australia, he re-educated himself for 14 years in various universities, and continued to devote his heart to the arts and his mind to the freedom of his motherland. He has come back to visit Vietnam a few times and has received unkind treatment from police. Since 2006, he has not returned to his motherland and thought that he should only do so only when she becomes a truly free and democratic country.
In Australia, he founded and edited the literary journal Tập Họp (1987-1989) and, with Nguyễn Hưng Quốc, was the co-editor of Việt, an important journal that existed from 1998 to 2001. Since 2002, he has been the co-editor of the groundbreaking webzine Tiền Vệ, the only Vietnamese literary journal that updates its contents daily.
His critical essays, poems and stories have appeared in most overseas Vietnamese literary journals. His publications in Vietnamese and English include: Văn Học Hiện Đại và Hậu Hiện Đại qua Thực Tiễn Sáng Tác và Góc Nhìn Lý Thuyết [Modern and Postmodern Literature through Creative Practices and Theoretical Perspectives] (California: Văn Nghệ, 2001); Time & Destiny (Sydney: The University of Sydney, 2002) [visual art criticism]; In-Between 1.5 Generation (Liverpool: Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, 2000) [translating and editing, with Carmel Killin and Dunja Katalinic]; The Bridge: Anthology of Vietnamese Australian Writing (Liverpool: Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, 2004) [introducing, editing and translating]; From the Editors: Migrant Communities and Emerging Australian Literature (Liverpool: Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, 2007) [essays — with Jose Wendell P. Capili, Sumana Viravong and Noonee Doronila]. A number of his critical essays and translations have been included in various anthologies in Vietnam. He has also published under these pseudonyms: (for short stories) Trần Nhật Thổ, Hoàng Từ Dương, Hoàng Nha Trang; (for love poetry) Bỉ Ngạn; (for political satirical poetry and essays) Nguyễn Tôn Hiệt; (for essays and translations) Văn Phục, Hoặc Ngữ and Trần Tuệ Minh.
Beside literature, Hoàng Ngọc-Tuấn is actively involved in music and theatre as composer, guitarist, playwright and performer.
